Mysterious link between Israeli genocide and opposition’s movement in BD

International conflicts and domestic political objectives can overlap to create circumstances where seemingly unrelated events are interlaced in the complex and frequently confusing terrain of global politics. One such instance is the situation in Bangladesh, where opposition parties have escalated their political campaigns during times of increased Gaza conflict. It is said by critics that this approach fits with larger geopolitical plans shaped by Western interests and takes the huge Bangladeshi Muslim populations attention away from the genocide in Gaza.

Bangladesh is the eighth most populated country in the world. It has the third highest Muslim population in the world after Indonesia and Pakistan. This huge population has drawn significant Western investment and involvement over the years. With the rise of Israeli violence over the Muslims and even Christians of Gaza, it was always very important for the West to suppress any anti-West sentiment in the region as the West, especially the US and the UK, are fanatically supporting the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

Bangladeshs political environment is characterized by a long-standing rivalry between the ruling party, the Awami League, and the main opposition, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), along with its allies such as Jamaat-e-Islami. This rivalry often manifested in intense political movements and even violent confrontations. The Awami League, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has maintained power though for consecutive four terms with their immense development works and inactive posture of the opposition parties. The BNP and other opposition factions have consistently struggled to regain influence with their ill-intent to gain the Western support to get them back to power.

Since 7 October, 2023 – when the recent Israel-Gaza conflict started, it has been evident that, the opposition parties of Bangladesh including BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami enhanced there anti-government movement throughout the country. On different occasions, whenever the Israeli atrocities reached its peak, the opposition movement also reached its peak. Recently also, when Israel was on the verge of attacking Rafah, the Southern city of Gaza, where millions of displaced citizens of Gaza took refuge, BNP, the largest opposition party of Bangladesh, heightened their movement since the beginning of May, 2024 without any apparent reason or incidents. Analyzing this scenario, it becomes evident that, there is a mysterious link between the Israeli genocide in Gaza and Bangladeshs domestic politics.

Hamas, the leadership of Gaza, launched an attack on Israel on 7 October, 2023 in response to Israels decades-long oppression in Palestine. It is unimaginable that, the citizens of Gaza had to depend on the mercy of the Israeli military to receive food and drinks for decades. This prolonged torture by the Israeli forces compelled Hamas to retaliate on that day. In response, Israel launched the most brutal genocide on Gaza since then with the political, economic, and moral support of its Western allies, especially the US and the UK.

The Israeli forces over the years have destroyed Palestinians habitat in Jerusalem, Ramallah, Golan Heights, Bethlehem, Jenin etc. and now they are destroying cities like Gaza City, Khan Younis, West Bank and most recently Rafah. Their attack is not limited to Gaza rather Israeli evil forces attacked the whole Palestine during the last 70 years.

Till now, more than 36,000 lives were lost including more than 15,000 children and 10,000 women, over 2,00,000 were injured of which 70% were children and women and millions were displaced after losing their homes from the Israel air and ground attacks. This brutal attack took away the lives of at least 105 media workers and 254 UN and other aid workers. The Israeli forces have turned Gaza into a living graveyard. They are now expanding their attacks in cities like Rafah and Khan Younis with intent to completely wipe out the Muslim and even Christian population from that zone.

The father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman always supported the Free Palestine cause. His eminent quote – “The world is divided into two camps – the exploiters and the exploited. I am for the exploited” – also expressed his support for the oppressed people of Palestine. Now, the Awami League government, led by Bangabandhus eldest daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has taken strong stance in support of Palestine, especially Gaza. They condemned the Israeli genocide on different global. Awami League is well known to be the pro-liberation forces of Bangladesh as they fought against the West Pakistani genocide over East Pakistan in 1971 and now they are standing against the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

On the other hand, the opposition parties including several Islamic parties did not even raise their voices despite their intent of becoming the leaders of the third largest Muslim-majority country of the world, as they sought the Wests support to regain power. This shameful game kept going during the 12th National Parliamentary Election though Awami League again formed government fighting against not only the domestic political challenges but also the Western adversities. BNP-Jamaat alliance and similar minded parties were in support of the West Pakistani genocide over East Pakistan in 1971 and now they are silently supporting the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

Historically, the West has influenced the global politics through its economic and democratic supremacy. They claim to be the champions of democracy, human rights and freedom of expressions. Incongruously, they only support those agendas whenever it suits them. Their way of manipulating the global population is not only limited to tools like media manipulation but also suppressing the voices by diverting attentions. It is also evident in the cases of Israeli genocide in Gaza.

The West has diverted the attention of the people of Pakistan, the second-largest Muslim-majority country, just before the Israeli atrocities took place in Gaza through destabilizing their political environment. Hence, millions of Pakistanis remained tangled with their domestic problem rather than raising their voice against Israel and the West. Similarly, with the vested involvement in the Middle East, the West has suppressed any strong movement from the Middle Eastern Muslim countries.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly Israeli genocide in Gaza, resonates deeply with the predominantly Muslim population of Bangladesh. However, the timing and manner in which opposition parties in Bangladesh have intensified their political movements during different phases of the prolonged Israeli genocides suggest a strategic dimension that goes beyond mere movement for power in Bangladesh.

During periods of intense Israeli attacks on Gaza, opposition parties in Bangladesh, especially BNP, often ramped up their political activities which also serves a dual purpose including diverting attention from the Gaza crisis. It is more evident from the activities of US ambassador to Bangladesh Peter D. Haas and even US Assistant Secretary Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu including other top US administrators as their intensified activities in Bangladesh is always complemented by both intensified Israeli attack in Gaza and intensified political movement in Bangladesh as to make a win, it is important for the West that voice is not raised over their actions, especially when the world is moving towards bi-polar power system again.

The opposition parties like BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Israel-affiliated Gono Odhikar Parishad – led by Nurul Haque Nur acted like an ally of the West in suppressing the voice of the Bangladeshi people as it was the case in Pakistan. Though huge protests were staged in the US and other Western countries against Israeli genocide in Gaza as millions of students and general citizens from all religions or race participated in the protests despite heavy arrests, there was no such protests from the educational institutions or the general people in countries like Bangladesh or Pakistan and it can be attributed as a success of the US policy in these countries.

The people from the Western countries including the US were against Pakistani genocide in 1971 and now they are against the Israeli genocide in Gaza though their administration supported both the genocides. The Biden administration is cleverly advocating for human rights and democracy while supporting Israeli genocide in Gaza to boost their war economy and to establish control over the Middle Eastern oil supply. They are using their veto power in the UN Security Council to disallow Palestine the statehood even recently and also any possible ceasefire options. In this process they are ignoring their peoples demand as well as all other human rights pleas.

Ironically, the Western ploy to suppress the voice of people in the largest Muslim-majority countries did not help much as they are facing huge protests from their own citizens in the US, Europe and even Israel. Astonishingly, even the Jews are also condemning the Israeli acts all around the world. Palestine is gaining more and more support from all around the world, including Europe, for their recognition as an independent state. We hope, our people and political parties will stand for Palestine forgetting the petty West-influenced political agenda for the sake of humanity and honor.
